Western Union sent its final telegram message last on Friday, February 3, 2006, ending 145 years of history.
The company said the last ten telegrams included birthday wishes, death condolences and the notification of an emergency. They also included messages from several people simply trying to be the last telegram sender.
Other companies still offer telegrams in a few countries such as TeliaSonera (SE)
The pricelist is no longer on the westernunion.com site, but I remember looking at it a few years ago and it while it was comparable to a 24hour courier it would have been much cheaper to send a fax or of course an email.
The company, now Western Union “Holdings” was once known as Western Union “Telegraph Company”. One wonders when BP will sell their last drop of petroleum, as they recently changed their tagline from “British” Petroleum to “Beyond” Petroleum. Continue reading ‘The last telegram’
