CIT Mast to record Wind Data

CIT is erecting a wind monitoring mast on its Bishopstown campus, under a joint initiative from a number of Departments and the college buildings office. The mast will record wind data at a number of heights above the ground over the coming year. This data will be analysed by students on the Sustainable Energy Degree Programme, and others across a range of course programmes.

The company Wind Energy Direct, based in Limerick, will also evaluate the site potential as a wind resource for future development. The mast will be located adjacent to the existing 2.4 kW turbine behind the astro turf pitches and will be over 50m in height.

According to Chris Gibbons, Course Coordinator in Sustainable Energy at CIT:
“This is a very exciting development for the institute, and represents a real commitment to explore possible opportunities that exist for CIT to contribute to sustainable energy production… CIT is committed to an ambitious programme of energy savings, efficiency and reduction through the Buildings Office and the Sustainable Campus Initiative”

Mr Gibbons continued: “I would like to express thanks to all those involved in the process and hope that over the coming year we can work together with the local community to develop a strategy for a sustainable future”
