Poetry to our ears

Alfred Joyce Kilmer (1886 – 1918) was an American journalist, poet, literary critic, lecturer, and editor. Though a prolific poet whose works celebrated the common beauty of the natural world as well as his religious faith, Kilmer is remembered most for a short poem entitled “Trees” (1913), which was published in in 1914. At the time of his deployment to Europe during the first World War (1914–1918), Kilmer was considered the leading American Catholic poet and lecturer of his generation, A sergeant in a U.S. Infantry Regiment, Kilmer was killed at the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918 at the age of 31.

The text stated below is the original written by Kilmer.

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

There have been several variations on the text, including many parody texts substituted to mimic Kilmer’s seemingly simple rhyme and meter, and questioning the poem’s choice of metaphors.[37] Of the often repeated parodies, one of the most known is “Song of the Open Road” by Ogden Nash (1902–1971):

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Indeed, unless the billboards fall,
I’ll never see a tree at all.[38]

and now for something completely different…

Haddaway - What is Love?

This is a 1993 dance track by the singer Haddaway, popular with club DJs. It later experienced a revival as the song from the Saturday Night Live “Roxbury Guys” sketches, which were later made into the 1998 feature film A Night at the Roxbury.

The song peaked at #2 in the United Kingdom and Germany, but it reached #1 in thirteen other countries, all of them European or Asian. In the United States the song reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #12 in Australia. The song is currently the 62nd best-selling single of all time in Germany, and you could have guessed that it would be in that country as it has Eurodance sound.

Desert Island Discs

The patent pending Ambrand.com 80s mix tape… aide de memoire… these songs should be preserved for the goodness of mankind,they are like precious works of art.

1980s
My love of the decade comes from soundtracks, mostly of Eddie Murphy movies. Some of these songs are so well known its hard to believe someone wrote them! They are so well known, and so referenced in popular culture - such as Family Guy - it’s as if they have always existed.

I;ve excluded Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis, because they would fill the page.

Addendum: Stevie Wonder, Huey Lewis, Michael Jackson have so many hits they could have their own pages, so I’ve tried to select the cream of the crop.
1990s
If a song is sampled many times its a rubber stamp of the popularity of its beat.

Frank Sinatra - Songs for Young Lovers/Swing Easy! (1955)

If there was only one album I could take to a desert island I would be torn between this and something by Nat King Cole.

For an album (originally two records) released in the 1950s, Songs for Young Lovers/Swing Easy! sounds quite modern. It was the first in a series of concept albums by Sinatra assisted by the ever talented Nelson Riddle.

Sinatra’s voice of the 1950s is deeper than the Sinatra of the 1940s Columbia era, it was his best period.We also love the third album of the Sinatra-Riddle Swing series; A Swingin’ Affair 1957.

Songs for Young Lovers consists of a satisfying set of ballads that formed the nucleus of a Sinatra catalogue and showed up in concert through the 1960s and later.

Swing Easy, originally the second side of the Capitol LP (when the two albums were married and released). Put simply, there is nothing  retro-sounding about this set, except that it was recorded in mono because hey it was the 1950s. But magnetic tape mus have been used because the sound quality is amazing. I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, later popularised by Dean Martin, is timeless.

Tino Rossi

Tino Rossi (1907–1983) was a singer and film actor from Corsica, France

ifted with an operatic voice, a “Latin Lover” persona made him a movie star as well. Over his career, Rossi made hundreds of records and appeared in more than 25 films, the most notable of which was the 1953 production, Si Versailles m’était conté directed by Sacha Guitry. His romantic ballads had women swooning and his art-songs by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947), and other composers helped draw sold out audiences wherever he performed.

I only discovered him on YouTube - don’t you just love the internet? - sadly his airtime these days is likely limited to Hollywood soundtracks of WWII dramas, perhaps one of his records played in an belle epoque cellar French bar.

Mr Excitement

I wasn’t around in the 1950s/60s, but I understand from watching Quantum Leap, and Back to the Future that they were a period of musical excellence.

Jacie WIlson was known as “Mr Excitement” and after watching this clip its easy to see why. This video actually adds something to the music. From now on whenever I hear this tune I’ll also see the video.

Calvin Harris is still active, and we are pleased

It will be recalled (well, ok it will not be recalled, I had to use the “search” button to find out that) over one year ago we wrote about Calvin Harris. We are pleased to hear (literally) that he is still active.

Talkboxing

It suits the modern…

and old pop classics…

even Stevie Wonder approves.

Lighthouse Family

Lighthouse Family were a British duo of Vocalist Tunde Baiyewu and keyboard player Paul Tucker. Lighthouse Family was active from the circa 1995-2003. The two men  formed the act in 1993 in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK after meeting at university. Their 1995 debut album Ocean Drive sold more than 1.6 million copies in the UK alone and established them as a popular easy listening duo throughout Europe.

Although none of their singles reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, they did reach number one on the Australian Singles Chart with the song “High”.

The voice of Tunde Baiyewu is pleasing to listen to. I have a theory that singers are born lucky, with the “right” voice; it must be pleasing to listen to as a speaking voice, and it must be controllable by pitch as a singing voice.

I have a please speaking voice, and have done voiceovers for radio commercials here in Ireland, but alas I think I am not blessed with a singing voice. I can hear the sounds in my head but I cannot make my voice output what I want. This is a common complaint, I suppose I am lucky I realise my weaknesses.

At secondary school I was exposed to the Lighthouse Family in my friends first car. It was an old Volvo with no aerial and so the radio could only receive long wave, in Ireland there were only two stations receivable on long wave; BBC Radio 4 (Long wave version), and Long Wave 252. The latter was actually broadcast from Ireland, but was peopled by american accents talking to a British audience. In 1995/1996 the station must have suffered from budget cuts because they played Lighthhouse family constantly; or was it just how it seemed?

Getting back to facts Lighthouse Family split up in early 2003 because of what they called a “heavy promotional schedule” following the release of Whatever Gets You Through the Day in 2002. This led to both men pursuing individual projects. Baiyewu is now a solo artist, while Tucker joined a rock band, The Orange Lights.

According to their manager, the band has not split up despite being inactive; “there is always the possibility of another Lighthouse Family album one day.”

Enrique Iglesias

Long time readers - or even short time readers who have looked at the archives - will know I am a fan of olde time music such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and even Enrico Caruso.

This week I discovered a modern artist onto which I can apply my seal of approval. I found him by accident when searching for either “Enrico” (Caruso) or “Marta” (a Bing crosby song), I ended up a discography of one Enrique Iglesias who happens to have a song called “Marta”, gee wiz Batman the internet truly is a door opener.

Enrique Iglesias (1975-) is a Grammy Award and Latin Grammy Award-winning Spanish-born, Miami-based singer. He is the son of the famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, whose work I am already a semi-fan of. He is not to be confused with Ricky Martin.

Iglesias’s career started on Indie label Fonovisa who helped turn him into one of the most popular artists in Latin America and in the Latin market in the United States selling more Spanish albums than any other artists in that period of time. Just before the turn of the millennium he made a crossover into the mainstream English market and signed a unique multi-album deal with Universal Music for an unprecedented USD 48m with Universal Music Latino to release his Spanish albums and Interscope to release English albums.

Iglesias has had five Billboard Chart #1 singles in English and holds the record for most ever Spanish language #1s on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks with Seventeen. He is also the best selling Latin act in the United Kingdom as well the Best Selling International Artist in India

In 1995, he released his first album Si Tu Te Vas, but it is his 2001 Album Hero that was his first major success. The titular track was adopted by producers of9-11 montages and entered the public consciousness as a staple.
