Getyername is another “who are they?” registrar I had the misfortune of getting an account with when I bought a domain via SnapNames. I just logged in to change the nameservers, but after pressing Submit the cookie-cutter site returns and an error
There was a problem with some of the details provided. Please look below for the messages in red to see what the problem was.
However there are no messages in red, and there shouldn’t be because my new nameservers are valid.
Rather then even contacting Getyername support I just decided to transfer the domain to another registrar. Ah the pleasure of “walking away”. Since my experience with EasySpace, and Yahoo, and considering I manage hundreds of domains I have little time for bad registrars.

1and1.com is a US based domain reseller that uses the ICANN registrar SCHLUND+PARTNER AG. They are selling the gTLDs of com, net, org, info for an amazing low USD 5.99.
That beats GoDaddys USD 9.17 - which is GoDaddys actual price, they might advertise something lower but in reality once you reach the checkout you’ll find they add the ICANN fee and your promotion code you were relying on won’t work.
So, a domain for USD 5.99, cool. I had to register one straight away! But yet today, two days after pressing the Submit button on my credit card details, the domain is not registered. For any other product that might be acceptable but not with domains, as while they are drinking coffee, or whatever they do in the 1and1 office, someone else could register the domain, at any second. A search reveals that 1and1 used to only accept customers from the US and UK, now they will accept customers from anywhere, but I guess that manually process the credit card numbers.
1and1 are thus added to my Registrar blacklist, where they join EasySpace. Continue reading ‘1and1.com Problems’

Think back to 1998, the IEDRs rules were very restictive, if you wanted a .ie you might have settled for a .ie.nu domain.
It’s now 2006, the IEDRs rules have been relaxed, does the .ie.nu still have anything to offer?
Well including VAT a .ie.nu costs EUR 84.70, and a .ie costs EUR 54.45 (from a reseller called blacknight, as the registry encourages potential registrants to deal with resellers rather then with it directly by a pricing policy)
Regardless of pricing one cannot recommend a psudo cctld, the extension for Ireland is .ie full stop. Readers will recall the .uk.co saga
Technically speaking .nu is the cctld for Nieu, an island in the South Pacific. It is a member of the commonwealth of nations, and since 1974 has been a self-governing parliamentary area in free association with New Zealand. So while its policitical climate seems more solid then Columbia’s using the domain still doesn’t look good, and remember when it comes to domains looks are everything! as it is humans that visit websites. Well, yesterday was April 7, 2006 the public “landrush” launch of the .eu gTLD. THe Registry EURid has published a live ranking of registrant countries.
At the time of writing it reads
AT 24,425
AX 613
BE 30,604
CY 72,923
CZ 14,715
DE 369,540
DK 18,059
EE 1,015
ES 19,761
FI 3,704
FR 47,821
GB 259,036
GF 3
GI 216
GP 10
GR 5,544
HU 6,535
IE 15,708
IT 78,190
LT 1,208
LU 9,209
LV 2,048
MQ 4
MT 6,681
NL 145,679
PL 19,991
PT 2,099
RE 54
SE 59,467
SI 979
SK 3,791
I’d like to see this list supplemented with the populations of the countries, and per capital figure therefrom calculated. But even in it’s absense a few things are clear DE - Germany and NL- Netherlands like the domain, and indeed these are in the core of the Union. More surprising is the high uptake from GB - Great Britain, what about their euro-sceptics? and the low uptake from FR - France. Continue reading ‘.eu gTLD registrant locations’

The domain registration arm of Hosting365, which is called Register365, has recently gained ICANN accreditation according to the ICANN shortlist and ICANN longlist
Register365, Inc. (Ireland)
http://www.register365.ie
Tel: +353-146-73600
Email: hostmaster@register365.ie
The company name suffix of Inc sounds wrong, it should be Ltd unless they established a corporation in a US state, nevertheless congratulations to Hosting365. Continue reading ‘Register365.ie gains ICANN accreditation’

I recently received an unsolicited email about a domain I had registered in the previous week. I think it is SPAM, because it has all the hallmarks of a script generated email and the text sounds like a scam, read on…

It is likely that if I replied the sender would suggest I order a domain value “appraisal” from a party of his choice, maybe sedo (via an affilate link) or a appraisal mill.

Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November, all the rest have 31 except February which… has 28th and… doesn’t rhyme…

The Irish Government’s “Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism” recently used the WIPO system against “Odyssey Internet Portal Limited”
The Department states it had intended to use the domain cultureireland.ie for a new agency called “Culture Ireland” with the goal of promoting Irish culture, which is admirable. However the Department proceeded to have their stationary printed and their agency publicised in the media before actually registering the domain!
David vs Goliath? Well the registrant never responded and still got to keep the domain!
Now here’s the thing, the very same Department that filed the recent WIPO actually had the domain back in 2002 for a brand called Cultúr and let it drop meanwhile.
Interestingly, this is only the 3rd .ie ccTLD to enjoy a complete WIPO, the others were three.ie and shopelectric.ie. Continue reading ‘Register the domain before printing the stationary’
