500GB harddrive released by Western Digital

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM. 500GB is a a nice capacity, and westerndigital.com even says…

Whisper quiet – These highly reliable drives deliver technologically advanced acoustics. With its WhisperDrive™ and SoftSeek™ technologies, WD has minimized noise to levels virtually imperceptible to the human ear in home and business environments.

But I’d only believe that when I hear it, I have four WD’s at the moment in the 160 - 320GB range and all have a whine that increases and decreases in intensity every second. I’ll never buy a Western Digital Harddrive again, well unless it was very cheap!

I’ve already written off Quantum after 3 aptly named fireballs of different capacity gave a click of death back in 2001.

Seagate seems to have the quietest drives. I’d recommend the Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM, I’d but it myself but I’m saving for a flatpanel because my CRT is whining. Continue reading ‘500GB harddrive released by Western Digital’

LCD vs CRT

I have been saving for a new monitor because my old one has started whining (although only I can hear it). I was just looking at 17′ LCDs on komplett and 17′ CRTs, checking out prices. I see that they hardly stock any of the latter these days. DHL et al. must be dissapointed, because light LCDs cost less to post. Continue reading ‘LCD vs CRT’

Computer noise

I’ve always hated the noise my computers make. My first 8086 (or was it 8088) sounded like a vaccum cleaner, but back then I was young and too excited about just having a computer to worry about the noise.

When I was putting away the christmas decorations a few years ago I took out this machine and opened the case. The CPU didn’t have a fan, instead the noise came from the industrial PSU (no casemodding back then) and harddrive (30MB!).

Fast forward to the present day and my current computer is noisy. Not as bad sure, but with a XXmm on the CPU, 120mm & 80mm on the PSU, and three whining harddisks it isin’t exactly whisper quiet. Fortunately these days I have a credit card and internet access so I can solve the problem by buying noise dampening foam, and silent components.

So I now have a harddrive enclosures, fanless PSU, Foam Padding inside case and so on. But I’ve spent so much money on my components I don’t have any left for a flat panel monitor.

Laptop vs Desktop

In the US, laptops are now more popular than desktops. There are many theories why this is the case (sic)

  • Laptops are becoming as powerful as their desktop counterparts.
    • Prices are falling - laptop prices dropped 17% last year, while desktops fell only 4%.
