Desert Island Discs

The patent pending Ambrand.com 80s mix tape… aide de memoire… these songs should be preserved for the goodness of mankind, they are like precious works of art.

1980s
My love of the decade comes from soundtracks, mostly of Eddie Murphy movies. Some of these songs are so well known its hard to believe someone wrote them! They are so well known, and so referenced in popular culture - such as Family Guy - it’s as if they have always existed.

I;ve excluded Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis, because they would fill the page.

Addendum: Stevie Wonder, Huey Lewis, Michael Jackson have so many hits they could have their own pages, so I’ve tried to select the cream of the crop.
1990s
If a song is sampled many times its a rubber stamp of the popularity of its beat.

Hugh Laurie before House

A bit of Fry & Laurie (1989-1995) is amazing, yet again, a TV programme forgotten has been rediscoved thanks to YouTube

The acting reminds me of Quincy ME (1976-1983), which has been mocked by Opie and Andy as Jimcy ME

History of Advertising

Toyota Corolla - South Africa - 1984
This is so 80s! it makes no apologies, It is the best Toyota ad ever; The catchy tune, clothing, robot dancing, stop motion movements. It’s so exciting you’ll feel like buying the car, but you can’t, you wouldn’t even be able to find a second hand one so much time has passed. Can someone let me know did this ad appear cheesy at the time or what? Surely it must have I can’t believe that styles can change that much.

Ford Fiesta mk2 - Spain - n.d.
The mk2 was produced from 1983-1988. This ad boasts five gears and the dashboard looks quite “modern” so I’d guesstimate its from 1988. he music isin’t great, but stop-motion shots of 80s clothing definitely places this one in the museum of cheesyness.

Electrolux 1984

It has been official for some months now; Ireland’s economy is in Recession. That word, and its big brother, Depression, call forth memories of the 1980s.

But things are different now. Back then a fridge freezer was a luxury item.

We have dug deep into the Archives of Ambrand.com and come up with some brochures which exude light tan and sienna; the colours of the decade. Times were different. back then brochures actually showed diagrams of items, indeed back then car advertisements often had photographs of boots (or trunks to our American readers) to show their cavernious qualities or felt carpeted floors. Ah yes the “rule” of not including specifications on product brochures/boxes annoys this writer.
