The death of King Malietoa Tanumafili II of Samoa

Samoa, officially the Independent State of Samoa, is a country governing the western half of the Samoan Islands archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean.

King Malietoa (1913 – 2007) was the oldest serving Head of State in the world. He was also the world’s third-longest reigning living monarch after Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand since 1946, and Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and other realms since 1952.

Appointed as one of two high chiefs to jointly lead Samoa on Independence from New Zealand in 1962, King Malietoa held the post for 44 years after the death of his colleague Tupua Tamasese in 1963.
