In the 1960s, Dr. Peter Witt gave drugs to spiders and observed their effects on web building.

Randy Newman - A Few Words in Defense of Our Country

A nice tune, played so effortlessly, and it must be the only song to mention King Leopold of Belgium (shouldn’t that be King Leopold of the Belgians?)

A Few Words in Defense of Our Country (Lyrics and Music by Randy Newman)

I’d like to say a few words
In defense of our country
Whose people aren’t bad nor are they mean
Now the leaders we have
While they’re the worst that we’ve had
Are hardly the worst this poor world has seen

Let’s turn history’s pages, shall we?

Take the Caesars for example
Why within the first few of them
They had split Gaul into three parts
Fed the Christians to the lions
And burned down the City
And one of ’em
Appointed his own horse Consul of the Empire
That’s like vice president or something
That’s not a very good example, is it?
But wait, here’s one, the Spanish Inquisition
They put people in a terrible position

I don’t even like to think about it
Well, sometimes I like to think about it

Just a few words in defense of our country
Whose time at the top
Could be coming to an end
Now we don’t want their love
And respect at this point is pretty much out of the question
But in times like these
We sure could use a friend

Hitler. Stalin.
Men who need no introduction
King Leopold of Belgium. That’s right.
Everyone thinks he’s so great
Well he owned The Congo
He tore it up too
He took the diamonds, he took the gold
He took the silver
Know what he left them with?
Malaria

A president once said,
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”
Now it seems like we’re supposed to be afraid
It’s patriotic in fact and color coded
And what are we supposed to be afraid of?
Why, of being afraid
That’s what terror means, doesn’t it?
That’s what it used to mean

The end of an empire is messy at best
And this empire is ending
Like all the rest
Like the Spanish Armada adrift on the sea
We’re adrift in the land of the brave
And the home of the free
Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye.

Ireland is slowly becoming a Police State

I previously wrote about The Private Security Authority and how it acts as an agent of the Revenue Commissioners in ensuring tax compliance of sections of the populace by requiring a Tax Clearance Certificate from its clients.

Well today my attention was drawn to the activities of another resonably new body (est 2001)called the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE).

This morning, Tuesday 13th February 2007, a shocking word appeared on the news page of their website, the word… was “Extension”. When used in an official context this word is almost always shocking, it is used to slip in a rule that the populace do not like and play down its importance as a mere “extension” of an already existing rule.

I am of course envoking Godwin’s Law here.

But can we blame the ODCE they say they are merely implementing “SI No. 49 of 2007
EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (COMPANIES) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS 2007″, which is a mere implementation of “EU Directive 2003/58/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 July 2003″, the ODCE are merely following orders.

In the short term the new requirements are wonderful for webmasters who can make a fast buck editing their clients, and former clients sites, but in the longer term these requirements are worrying, they are but the latest example of the increasing red tape clogging life in Ireland.

Louis Prima

Louis Prima (1910–1978) was an American entertainer, singer, actor, and trumpeter. He was the “King of the Swingers”. Prima rode the musical trends of his time, but his sytle was always influenced by New Orleans and Sicily. In each of his musical endeavors, he incorporated his exuberant personality into his act.

I wanna be like you, from the Jungle Book (1967)

Oh Marie (1957), a very lively performance

Just A Gigolo (1956)

I’ve got you under my skin, with Keely Smith

Cork City Council wins cork.eu

On January 5, 2006 Traffic Web Holding B.V. filed an application for the Domain Name cork.eu under the Sunrise Rules. Their application was based on an expedite Benelux trademark registration, which was filed on December 23, 2005 and obtained on January 4, 2006, for the word “cork” under Class 3 for “bleaching agents”.

A few days later, on January 11, 2006, Cork City Council (who already have cork.ie) filed an application for the domain name cork.eu under the Sunrise Rules. The Complainant based its application upon on a prior right covered by Article 10 (3) of the Regulation N° 874/2004.

Traffic Web Holding B.V. obtained the registration of the Domain Name as they was the first applicant to submit a registration.

So, both parties had a claim to the domain, and the early bird caught the worm. Everything seems fair.

However the ADR Panel, after deliberation, decided that Traffic Web Holding B.V. used had the intention and the purpose to obstruct the registration by Complainant during the Sunrise period. Thus the ADR Panel concluded that they registered and used the Domain Name “in bad faith”, and thus must surrender the name.

I am pleased at the result and imagine that in time they will have to surrender other specific and generic domains that they registered.

The moral of the story, for “domain speculators” is if you are going to register domains you should create some website relevant to the name and not just park them, and the moral of the story, for cities is if you are going to register domains do it quickly and you can avoid lenghty cases.
