i am involved in the security industry in ireland, i run a small alarm installation buisness, yes your right, there is too much regulation in irish life, its almost funny, only its tragic. the private security authority is a pension plan for government employees, when it was set up it drew its staff mainly from other government departments, i agree with regulation of the security buisness, but if they want to regulate me, let them pay for it themselves, all this is just a revenue generating game, nothing else, and they do not put unlicenced companys out of buisnesss, well..sometimes they do, it all depends on who you are. these authoritys are not set up for the good of the industry, but to get rid of the smaller companys such as myself, and before anyone decides to lash out at my comments, just go through the horse shit that i have to put up with and then you are fit to comment! have a nice day

[...] It seems that political parties and other large organisations are coming to the realisation (thanks in large to YouTube) that online video is not just a toy. This is a copy of the earlier realisation that a website was not just a vehicle for advertising a phone number. The Data Protection Commissioner in Ireland has produced a 17 minute guidance video. As a wealthy businessman I thought I should watch it to see if I need to register with another official body and waste some more money, but for some unknown reason the online mov version is only 60 seconds long. Perhaps they wish to make a profit from sales of the DVD version? No that is free, so I must conclude the real reason is they want the names and addresses of those viewing the video, so they can cross-check their details against the register and pursue those who are not registered, or perhaps they just consider online videos to be a toy?
[...] I previously wrote about The Private Security Authority and how it acts as an agent of the Revenue Commissioners in ensuring tax compliance of sections of the populace by requiring a Tax Clearance Certificate from its clients. Well today my attention was drawn to the activities of another resonably new body (est 2001)called the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE). This morning, Tuesday 13th February 2007, a shocking word appeared on the news page of their website, the word… was “Extension”. When used in an official context this word is almost always shocking, it is used to slip in a rule that the populace do not like and play down its importance as a mere “extension” of an already existing rule. I am of course envoking Godwin’s Law here. But can we blame the ODCE they say they are merely implementing “SI No. 49 of 2007 EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (COMPANIES) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS 2007″, which is a mere implementation of “EU Directive 2003/58/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 July 2003″, the ODCE are merely following orders. In the short term the new requirements are wonderful for webmasters who can make a fast buck editing their clients, and former clients sites, but in the longer term these requirements are worrying, they are but the latest example of the increasing red tape clogging life in Ireland.
Requiring a Tax Clearance Cert is a good idea. It will scare off the dodgy fly-by-night companies.
