The death has been announced today of Charles (Charlie) Haughey (16 September 1925 – 13 June 2006). Mr Haughey served as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland for three terms.
Following his retirement from active politics, allegations were made about undisclosed payments to several Irish politicians. The Moriarty Tribunal was formally established by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to establish the nature and source of payments made to Charles Haughey (Fianna Fail) and Michael Lowry (Fine Gael) between January 1979 and December 1996. The tribunal has so far uncovered payments totalling more than IEP 8 million to Haughey, including one payment of IEP 1.3 million from the businessman Ben Dunne. The tribunal recently heard from the Revenue Commissioners that Haughey paid EUR 5 million (IEP 3.94 million) to settle his tax affairs in 2003.
The preferred instrument of payments during the timeframe of concern was the cheque, which will soon depart itself from Irish life, and to paraphrase current Taoiseach Bertie Ahern “…marks the passing of an era.”
