Cork Service Stations

Service Stations - or Petrol Stations if you still haven’t heard of diesel - have been closing in Cork (and Limerick) for some time.

On the Western Road:
Esso (Muskerry)

On the Douglas Road:
Statoil Johnson & Perott, Maxol Belair, and Esso Dunmahon

On Brian Boru Street:
Top? (Small Corner site)

On Lower Glanmire Road:
Esso? (On left when approaching railway station)

It seems that petroleum retailing isin’t viable business. Most stations are privately owned reseller of their corporate partners. They buy oil at variable prices and sell it to the customer at a percentage margin. The recent closures suggest that something has changed. Perhaps the corporates are selling their oil for very high prices to resellers, and selling oil direct to to consumers at corporate owned flagships stations at lower prices, thereby forcing the private owner out of business, or perhaps private owners are realising that their sites (which are inherently in key locations, with impressive road frontage, with existing approved vertical signs) would be more profitably expotited by developers of apartments, and of course the owners need not feel ashamed at this realisation, they are ultimately running a business with the objective of turning a profit, not providing a public service.

Conjecture aside, the net result is a reduction in competition. Which always leads to higher prices for the consumer. Also the net result is inconvenience. Imagine you find that you car is running low on Patrick Street. Heading West the next station is Carrigrohane Straight Statoil, Heading South the next station is South Douglas Road Texaco.

But these closures are not unique to Cork or even Ireland they are mirrored cough across the ocean, and time. Continue reading ‘Cork Service Stations’

Irish Birth/Marriage/Death Certificates

New Style Certificates are now being issued. Hitherto when a a certificate, or a certified copy thereof, was requested a landscape hard form was completed in writing, every particular transcribed by a functionary. However now portrait laser printed certificates are being issued. These are not branded (ie rubber stamped), but the paper is secure. Continue reading ‘Irish Birth/Marriage/Death Certificates’

Cork Consulates

Everyone knows that Dublin (the capital of Ireland) has many foreign Embassies. A lesser known fact is that Cork, being the second city, has many Consulates. A Consulate is headed by a (in descending order) Consul-General, Consul, Vice-Consul, or Honorary-Consul.

Here at Ambrand Dot Com we find the Consular system fascinating. Accordingly we undertook some fieldwork around Cork.

The listing was compiled from public sources, then corrected by shoe leather and petrol whenever we happened to be passing near an address on our normal business. If you have any corrections, or additions, please leave a comment below or contact us via the contact page.

It is hoped this page may be of some assistance to citizens of the respective countries requiring consualr assistance. The photos will be invaluable in this regard, incidentially the aforesaid are copyright Ambrand Dot Com 2007 and may not be used elsewhere without advance written permission

I recently sumbled upon this huge portal while searching for some keyword. It actually was useful. I’d really like to have the source code of the script used. Continue reading ‘Self updating websites’

LCD vs CRT

I have been saving for a new monitor because my old one has started whining (although only I can hear it). I was just looking at 17′ LCDs on komplett and 17′ CRTs, checking out prices. I see that they hardly stock any of the latter these days. DHL et al. must be dissapointed, because light LCDs cost less to post. Continue reading ‘LCD vs CRT’

JCB Song

The Bob the Builder was a chart success a few years ago. Wll now another related song (it’s also s about building and has EN-GB vocals) has emerged. I heard this on the radio yesterday, its excellent. You can hear it at Nipoli’s website (the audio is embedded in some flash so browse once you get there) Continue reading ‘JCB Song’

Yahoo Domains transfer problem

I need to perform a registry transfer of a .org domain. Its currently with the registrar MelbourneIT, however it was bought through the resller Yahoo Domains (hey, it was only a USD 2.99). Since the PIR move all .org transfers require an AUTHorization code. This code doesn’t appear in the Yahoo Domains control panel, their FAQ directs intending deserters to contact Yahoo Domains via a webform and ask for the code. I did this and a rep replied by email asking for my zip code etc, I replied immediately with those, I misspelled my mothers maiden name so he asked for other details which I replied with.

All is well so far, however since that time Yahoo Domains has been a blackhole. My emails go unanswered. Further, the registry MelbourneIT is also a blackhole.

Maybe if I close my Yahoo Domains account an automated process will send a MelbourneIT user and pass to my email address, and then hopefully their control panel will be solid enought to actually contain the AUTHorization code. However closing the account could also have the effect of me losing the domains (they would still exist until expiry but I’d have no control panel to control or renew them, and Yahoo support wouldn’t be any help)

A cynic would suggest that both ignore requests because they don’t want to wave goodbye to the ongoing annual fees.

It seems that I am not alone in having transfer problems with Yahoo! Domains, see here & here & here & here and here

I think I have a solution. Cancel domains in te Yahoo Domain control panel, use the yahoo domains contact form to ask for the “melbourneit registry key” (it seems that, they do receive all messages, they just seemingly ignore anything that cannot be answered with a script), once you have the key you can interact directly with melbourneit via their contact form quoting your newly learned “melbourneit registry key”, they will reply in 48hours with the code. Then check the domain is unlocked in the melbourneit “domain management”, it will be by default.

Irish Stereotype

Well it also has a US stereotype. Check out this video from Mike Nesmith (he was one of the Monkees).

Top 25 Irish Blogs

Ah shucks I didn’t make the list. I’ll have to console myself with a bottle of VAT 69 (only joking)

S*x Sells

The domain s*x.com has been sold for USD 14m.
